Musical Ministry at Immanuel

Director of Music

Muriel Hopkins

Mrs. Hopkins is an experienced Peabody Conservatory and Towson University trained Organist, Pianist, and Harpsichordist who is the current Director of Music and Choir Director at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Hopkins has been a church musician since age sixteen when she became the Organist, and later the Choir Director at the Methodist Church next door to her home on Mayfield Avenue in Baltimore. She stayed there many years until the church closed, and it was during this time that she continued her Peabody studies, in Pipe Organ, at the Conservatory.

After she completed my degree in Music Education at Towson University in 1997 with a concentration in Pipe Organ and Piano Studies, she completed the graduate credits for her Master’s Degree in Music Performance. She accepted a position at a Catholic Parish in Riveria Beach, MD, where she played 6-7 weekend liturgies, accompanying the Adult, Children’s, Youth Instrumental and Handbell Choirs on the Pipe Organ, and directed the Contemporary Music Ensemble on the piano.

Mrs. Hopkins has been the accompanist at various schools since the age of thirteen, and continues to do so to this day.

Mrs. Hopkins can concertize on the organ and the piano (Major works, famous composers), as well as being an excellent sight-reader. She loves playing music of all styles, particularly by her favorite composer, J.S.Bach. She chooses hymns for Immanuel based on the Liturgy of the Day and Season.

Our Organs

Immanuel Lutheran Church has two Möller Organs: A large three-manual instrument in the Chancel, and a small two-manual organ in the West Gallery.  The Chancel and Gallery organs are connected; either (or both) organs can be played from each of the two consoles.

The Chancel organ is a venerable instrument with an interesting history going back to 1924 and 1935.  When the new building was dedicated in 1951, the organ was placed in the Chancel with tonal changes: re-voicing of the pipes and the addition of new ranks of pipes.

In 1963, the West Gallery organ was installed, the gift of the late Mr. Jacob Bockelman, then president of the congregation.

Since 1951, improvements and new ranks of pipes have periodically been added to the Chancel organ, with a new console in 1978, and a new Great Mixture in 1980.  This Mixture was a gift from the late Dr. William A. Renzi, one of Dr. Wegner's former students.
